The ISB collects and shares public training materials related to biocuration. We welcome submissions either through this form or via email at isb@biocurator.org. In your email, please include the title, a description of the training materials, and a URL where they can be accessed publicly.
Learning about biocuration
This is a good place for new or experienced biocurators to learn about the state of the field.
- The Biocuration e-learning collection from EMBL-EBI
This collection brings together online tutorials and videos introducing knowledge and skills pivotal to biocuration, including ontologies, programming and text mining.
Data management and FAIR training materials
- Data management and FAIR data – list of materials available in ELIXIR TeSS
- FAIRsharing Educational material – ELIXIR TeSS (Content Provider: fairsharing.org)
- Bringing data to life (Data management for the biomolecular sciences) – EMBL-EBI
Ontology development training materials

Learning to contribute to a specific resource
These links are “how-to” guides on how to contribute to a specific resource. These guides typically include some background in the specific domain the resource covers (e.g., molecular biology for WikiPathways), some curation guidelines, and an explanation on how to contribute curations (e.g., through a web interface, as pull requests on GitHub, etc.). They’re a great place for new biocurators.
- WikiPathways Academy (ISB’s favorite suggestion for first-time biocurators with cellular/molecular biology backgrounds)
- Curating CIViC
- Curation with the Biological Expression Language
- How to curate the INDRA Database
- PanelApp Reviewer’s Guide
- Variant Pathogenicity Training Materials
- Wikidata
Passive
These links are to passive learning guides on how to contribute to a specific resource. They cover webinars, slide decks, and related resources. These are a bit less accessible for new curators, but useful for increasing knowledge on a specific resource for skilled curators.
Advanced
These links are to advanced learning guides on how to contribute to a specific resource. They are a bit more advanced or dense than the resources listed above, and might not be the best place for a new curator to begin.
Programming training materials
Biocurators benefit from a basic or intermediate knowledge of general purpose programming languages like Python, shell scripting languages like the Bourne Again Shell (BASH), and statistical packages like R.
